Assessment of Teaching - Peer Review of Materials

Peer review of instructional materials is typically conducted when the instructor being reviewed provides the requested materials, which are then evaluated independently by the peer reviewer.

There is a wide range of instructional materials that may be considered for peer review, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Syllabus
  • Teaching Philosophy Statement
  • Class Assignments and Assessments
  • Presentation Materials (e.g., PowerPoints or videos)
  • Examples of student work

In some cases, academic units may choose to have instructors under review compile a teaching portfolio consisting of multiple sources of evidence of teaching effectiveness.

Peer review of instructional materials is most often conducted using a rubric-based assessment. A reviewer then rates the instructional materials according to the scale and components included in the rubric.

Below are resources that can inform academic units as they refresh their peer review guidelines.
